What is the best time of the day to catch trout? More and more people seem to be asking me this question regarding trout fishing.
This is a very open ended question as there are so many variables.
For example, in lakes I like the low light period of the day no matter what time of the year it is, whereas in streams I prefer mornings in summer and middle of the day in spring and autumn. Why is this so?
Trout fishing is such a diverse sport with so many variables in any regard. Different streamside vegetation from one stream to another can see one stream fish really well and the other fish really poorly at the same time. It all depends on the trouts diet, what is in the environment and the water temperature.
For example, if brown trout are feeding mainly on grasshoppers in November, then then early morning might not be a good time to fish as the grasshoppers probably are not flying due to their wings being dry.
Trout are a very smart species of fish, they will only eat a food source if it is in the environment. Trout will feed on worms at any time of the day, provided there are worms in the environment. After periods of prolonged dry spells, when the ground is dry, there will most likely not me any worms in the system and using them to catch a trout will be fruitless.
Anyhow, here is a video O have made detailing what I consider to be 3 rules to live by when trying to work out what time of the day is the best to fish for trout.
