(23 Feb 2015) Indian anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare kicked off a two-day protest in New Delhi on Monday, demanding that the government withdraw recent amendments to land acquisition laws and calling the move "anti-farmer".
Hazare was joined by hundreds of protesters including farmers' groups who gathered in the heart of the Indian capital, waving flags and signing patriotic songs.
Farmer rights' groups are opposing the controversial amendments to the land acquisition law, proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government.
The amendments would make it easier for industries and government to acquire land belonging to farmers, the groups claim.
In December last year, the government had passed an executive order making changes in the Land Acquisition Act, including removal of a farmer consent clause.
