External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar emphasized India's views on three key areas of global governance reform at the 2nd G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting. Firstly, he stressed the need to reform the United Nations, citing its failure to adapt to the evolving multi-polar world, resulting in its inability to maintain international peace and stability. He advocated for expansion in both categories of UN membership, particularly emphasizing proper representation for Asia, Africa, and Latin America.Secondly, Jaishankar highlighted the need to reform the international financial architecture, focusing on urgent development challenges and climate change. He emphasized that Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) must be made more robust and effective to address the estimated $4 trillion annual financing gap for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).Lastly, Jaishankar reaffirmed India's commitment to a rules-based, non-discriminatory, and fair multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core. He called for comprehensive WTO reform, ensuring a level playing field, fair competition, and a fully operational dispute settlement mechanism.
Jaishankar concluded by emphasizing the need for bold, transformative action to address these challenges, urging the G20 to drive this change for a more equitable and inclusive future.
