During the Second World War and as Hitler rose to power inside of Germany, there were many groups of resistance who tried to defy Hitler's Nazi Regime. Some of the most famous resistance elements were the White Rose, who distributed anti-Nazi propaganda, however members Sophie Scholl and Hans Scholl were dealt with brutally being executed. One other youth movement that defied the Nazi ideals and the Hitler Youth were the Edelweiss Pirates. These were a group of teenagers who wore whatever clothes they liked, met up and went camping and listened to banned music. They were a culture who hated the Hitler Youth, and they attacked them a number of times.
The Edelweiss Pirates were irritating to the Nazis, and in Cologne one significant group of the Pirates rose up. These were known as the Ehrenfeld Group, and they followed a man who escaped from a concentration camp. Together they stockpiled weapons, and planned to blow up the Gestapo HQ in Cologne, but their plan was foiled. Heinrich Himmler announced a crackdown on the group, and a number of the Edelweiss Pirates were arrested and tortured by the Gestapo for weeks. However after they gave no information up, they were then without trial brought to Cologne's Ehrenfeld Train Station to be executed.
A huge gallows had been created outside the train station, and 13 young men and teenagers were brought to the gallows to be executed. 3 of those executed that day were just 16 years old, and all together they were executed in front of a huge crowd on the huge structure. Today memorials mark the site of the executions, and the street is named after Barthel Schink, one of the youngest to die that day.
