This cute passport holder has a thin leather cover (I ordered the light pink color and like the shade). It's a nice soft leather, and has a smooth luster. I'm pleased with the wallet and it also holds two credit cards and has a pocket for some cash/papers. The right side is clear plastic for a window to see through. I'm glad I can fit my entire passport inside the clear plastic cover. There's plenty of space!
One of the most important parts of the design is RFID blocking. This protects against electronic pick-pockets who want to steal your ID and credit cards by scanning your information. I saw a show on Dateline where people can use equipment to stand in the same room and simply steal your data!
From TechTimes article:
RFID technology, or radio frequency identification, has been around for a long time. Along with the convenience, however, comes the risk of having the information contained on RFID-equipped items being stolen in a new brand of electronic pickpocketing known as RFID skimming.
The technology has made its way into a variety of items, including credit cards, driver's licenses and passports. These items, which are mostly found in the wallets of people, use embedded RFID chips to transmit information wirelessly to compatible readers to perform functions such as confirming the person's identity or paying for a purchase.
RFID uses radio waves to read information stored on tags attached to certain objects, and can be scanned from several feet away, without the need for a direct line-of-sight to the reader.
The Threat Of RFID Skimming
Individuals who have RFID readers can possibly activate the RFID chips embedded in personal items, which would allow them to extract sensitive information without the owner of the items even knowing that they were victimized. Over the years, hackers have demonstrated methods of using handheld RFID readers to acquire information from several feet away. Information that can be extracted this way include the name and country of origin listed in a passport, and more alarmingly, complete credit card numbers.
^^^ It's better to be safe than sorry! ^^^
Regarding the material that makes up the wallet. The leather is described as genuine. It's nice and looks pretty. I would not classify this wallet as luxurious or high-end looking. It's just a basic, practical, simple wallet that "gets the job done" and I like it.
:)
Interesting info:
This wallet is made up leather, polyester and polyurethanes
From the site "Polyurethanes.org"
Polyurethane is a plastic material, which exists in various forms. It can be tailored to be either rigid or flexible, and is the material of choice for a broad range of end-user applications such as: insulation, cushioning for furniture, mattresses, car parts, coatings, adhesives, rollers, tires, shoe soles, sportswear, etc. The list of applications is long and getting longer all the time, as new uses are found for this adaptable material.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the wallet, and just want to be protected from electronic scammers by keeping my passport and cards from a data rip-off scheme. I feel much better with RFID blocking technology "just in case."
