The beautiful sounds of Black-headed orioles resonating in the African savanna
One of my earliest childhood memories is the beautiful and liquid sound of orioles calling in the woodland outside the village I grew up in. While those were the Eurasian golden orioles and not the Black-headed ones in this recording, their calls are quite similar to each other. Their behaviour is very similar too, as they both like to skulk around in dry bushes. Even though they are brightly coloured, they are more often heard than seen because of this.
On my recent trip to Botswana and Zimbabwe I heard them very often and pleasantly remembered my childhood orioles. As I was exploring the savanna landscape of Botswana, I found a small valley nestled between the Lipadi hills where there seemed to be several displaying Orioles as well as many other African bird species. The topography of the place amplified birdsong in a subtle but beautiful way. It seems like several orioles also noticed these characteristics in the landscape. There was plenty of insects and small fruit to eat so the density of individuals was relatively high. This resulted in a lovely cacophony of Oriole calls, especially at dusk.
