I recently bought this 1986 Maico GM Star 250 that had been sitting in a damp shed in Ireland for 12 years untouched. I took the carb. off and cleaned it even though the jets did not seem to be clogged I blew them out, I put a new spark plug in it and a new Twin Air filter in it as the original was hard and crusty (fitting as the only stickers on the bike were twin air ones from the 80's), the fuel tap was clogged so I pulled it apart and cleaned it and then added fresh gas and it started on the very first kick after all those years. I then lubed the chain and put air in the tires and rode it for a few seconds the clutch worked fine and the brakes worked, a true testament to Maico as to how well they built bikes back in the day.
