From 1878 to 1920, the Navajo silversmiths birthed a new style of jewelry. It was made by Navajo for Navajo. With the expansion of the railroad, and the nascent automobile, the 1920s marked a turning point. There was a cross pollination of styles, pioneered by the Pueblo people, that redefined what SW Jewelry would become. We look at major trading centers of Gallup and Santa Fe and how a new Modernism was created.
