In a recent development, the government has clarified that the upcoming Operation Azm-i-Istehkam will not be a large-scale military action nor will it result in mass displacement of the local population. This statement was made in response to intense opposition criticism over the plans to launch military action without consulting parliament.
The plans for Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, announced on Saturday, aim to bolster national counter-terrorism efforts by augmenting the kinetic efforts of the armed forces with support from all law enforcement agencies and enacting effective legislation to address legal gaps hindering terrorism-related prosecutions.
Opposition parties, including the PTI, JUI-Fazl, and ANP, have voiced strong objections to the government's plans, with the KP chief minister denying any discussion of such an operation in a recent apex committee meeting.
In addressing these concerns, the PM Office clarified that previous kinetic operations required mass displacement due to the need to dislodge terrorists from no-go areas. However, as there are no such areas in Pakistan anymore, and terrorists' ability to carry out large-scale operations has been significantly degraded, no mass displacement will be necessary.
Operation Azm-i-Istehkam is described as a "multi-domain, multi-agency, whole of the system national vision" aimed at achieving enduring stability in Pakistan. It seeks to reinvigorate the ongoing implementation of the Revised National Action Plan, energizing intelligence-based operations to decisively root out terrorists, the crime-terror nexus, and violent extremism.
