This ginormous ‘81 Guild B-50 is too much fun. This model is among a handful of acoustic bass guitars I might actually own because it works as intended — it makes sound that can be heard mixed with a few other instruments in an acoustic setting.
The tradeoff is that it has an 18” wide body with deep back and sides and a short scale length. It’s a lot to manage in the lap but I don’t find myself fatigued by it because the plucking nature of bass doesn’t lend itself to as much forearm movement for me, anyway.
I gave it a neck reset, fret level/dress, and cut a second bass-side saddle slot because the factory compensation for that slot (these use 2 saddles) was way too steep. It now plays in tune and handles nicely, though I think a better set of strings would give it even more oomph.
