Bill Clinton said it is "time to get the show on the road" as he piled the pressure on the DUP to return to powersharing at Stormont.
The former US president said the Good Friday Agreement was "never supposed to be an engine of obstruction" as he added his voice to calls to restart devolved government as soon as possible.
Speaking on the final day of a three-day conference in Belfast to mark the 25 year anniversary of the peace deal, Mr Clinton said: "This whole deal was never supposed to be an engine of obstruction. The agreement was never supposed to be used to make sure there could be no self government, to make sure people should give up on it.
"We know what the votes were in the last election, we can add them up, the allocation of seats in the parliamentary body, and it is time to get the show on the road."
The DUP has said it will not return to powersharing until its concerns about post-Brexit border rules in Northern Ireland have been addressed.
