'Le Vie Cave' are a labyrinthine network of extremely narrow pathways carved by the Etruscans through volcanic tuff, many of which are to be found in Tuscany. The passages are cut so deeply into this solidified volcanic ash, that some of them are lined by walls as much as thirty metres in height. Curving through the hills of Tuscany, 'Le Vie Cave' also known as 'tagliate' connect ancient Etruscan settlements but, their confusing layout, might mean their role was far from practical.
In this video I discuss these ancient, dark, mysterious and imposing passageways. Largely overgrown with vegetation and running close to Etruscan necropolises, experts think these paths may have been connected with nature, the underworld and the afterlife. But nothing is certain. There are many alternative hypotheses for these strange constructions, which were unique to the Etruscan civilization. What do you think? Let me know in the comments!
