Do you want to catch more Northern Pike? Here are some tactics proven to bring you success when fishing for them!
In the spring they start to come shallow before they retreat to the colder, deeper holes when the water temps rise. You'll often see them cruising the shallows or holding to bottom like a log.
Often found in slower moving water where current is pushing in cooler water and food. Bonus points if there's any structure or cover they can relate to. I always cast to wood, rocks, and grass lines first before fan casting to find one cruising. Humps, ledges and drop offs are other high percentage targets.
Pike are curious and aggressive, you can catch them on just about on any bait. In the early season (just after ice-out) when water temps are between 40-50° F, start with slow presentations and speed up until you find the right pattern. After the spawn, when water temps are over 50°, they start to become aggressive and will chase down all kinds of baits, including explosive top water bites!
If you want to target them, you should have the following with you. I wouldn’t leave home without these 5 types of baits:
1) jerkbait (various depths)
2) Swimbait/glidebait
3) Underspin jig head with paddletail
4) Swim jig
5) Buzzbait, Plopper, buzztoad or other loud topwater bait
The colours I like in Ontario are white, clear, perch, and fire tiger. Sizes would be 4-8" for best results.
Good luck out there! Pike make for great eating as well, so don’t be shy! They are similar in taste to walleye, perch, and crappie.
