Beginning our Java Series, Yohana and I explore Java in Indonesia, starting with Malang, a charming town near the famous Mount Bromo volcano, the largest in Java and Indonesia.
We kick off our journey at Surabaya Airport, the closest to Malang. Without pre-booked transportation options, our first challenge is finding a way to the 2-hour car ride from Surabaya to Malang. Despite issues with the Javanese toll system, our driver adeptly manages the situation. Upon arrival in Malang, we check into The Shalimar, a 5-star boutique hotel priced at $80 or 1,230,000 IDR.
Arriving early, we dine at the in-house restaurant, savoring local specialties like Ikan Asin and a unique Jamur Drink known as Jowo Mojito. After this early lunch, we explore our room, noting its charming yet slightly worn-off ambiance—a worthwhile choice for its reasonable price.
Next, I set out to rent a motorcycle for our time in Malang. Amidst a sudden rain shower, my Grab driver assists me. After securing the bike and receiving valuable tips from the shop, I navigate the unfamiliar terrain. Suddenly, a deafening thunder and lightning strike directly behind my bike, creating a remarkable moment.
This marks our first day in Java, filled with unique experiences and the promise of further adventures.
