Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun said during an update on the situation in the city, which continues to deal with massive flooding, that water from the Nooksack River in the U.S. continues to pour across the border into the Sumas Prairie.
“We’re not out of this yet,” he cautioned on Wednesday.
Providing an update on evacuation efforts, police chief Mike Serr said first responders were able to evacuate 184 people from the Sumas Prairie Tuesday night as water levels continued to rise. He said rescue operations will continue this morning.
Officials also urged people to stay out of the area, explaining that it diverts resources that are needed elsewhere.
“If people start going into all sorts of places, we have to go and assist them in some cases because they get in to trouble,” Mayor Braun said, adding, “which means that we can’t go into somebody’s farm who really does need help.”
The mayor also cautioned people to stay out of floodwaters in the Sumas Prairie area, because of potential contamination from manure.
