(23 Apr 2019) Large numbers of people joined queues in Buenos Aires' central Plaza de Mayo Square on Tuesday as demonstrating fruit producers gave away hundreds of kilos of pears, apples and oranges.
Farmers from the provinces of Rio Negro, Neuquen and Entre Rios distributed the fruit in front of Government House in the heart of the Argentine capital.
The colourful demonstration, organised by various groups representing small-scale producers, set out to draw attention to the low profits being made by producers.
The protesters also called on the government to implement import restrictions on key products and put in place a policy of low interest loans, which would enable them to buy or retain land they are currently renting at "above the odds" prices.
The producers are asking the government of conservative President Mauricio Macri for measures to alleviate rising production costs and compensate for the gap between what the farmer charges for his produce in the countryside and the markup they are sold for in shops and supermarkets.
