So, you’ve decided to dive into the world of 3-rail O gauge trains. Whether your goal is a permanent layout, a temporary holiday display, or a surprise for the kids or grandkids a new starter set is a great way to begin.

Why a starter set? Well, as the name implies, a starter set will include everything you need to get started - a locomotive, some rolling stock, track, a power supply and a controller - all in one box! Sometimes scenery, structures, or operating accessories may be included as well. And, the components included in a starter set are generally much less expensive than purchasing them separately.

Menards released two basic starter sets in 2023, each featuring a scale-sized FP7 diesel in classic Santa Fe or Union Pacific colors, with a matching caboose with flashing red marker lights, a small oval of classic O gauge metal 3-rail track that perfectly matches the O gauge track produced throughout the 20th Century, a power supply and a remote control. The locomotive features diesel engine sounds as well as remote-operated bell, horn, and crew-talk sounds. The remote also controls the direction of the locomotive.
