STORYLINE
The head of the European Union urged Ukraine on Friday to show more political unity on European integration and more predictability on gas supplies so that relations can move forward.
EU President Jose Manuel Barroso made the statement at the annual EU-Ukraine summit.
He said the EU was ready to "support Ukraine in all areas."
"I, of course, hope also that Ukraine makes necessary reforms that this support is more effective," he added.
Yushchenko said the meeting had confirmed the "joint readiness" of the Ukraine and EU to work towards the creation of a "zone of free trade which will facilitate out integration in the common market of the European Union."
But the summit fell short of signing a new framework for ties.
Since the fall of 2008, the EU's relations with Ukraine have focused on two goals.
The bloc has sought to get Ukraine to adopt European rules for the energy market by signing the Energy Community Treaty, and the two sides have tried to negotiate a new Association Agreement, whose main objective is to lower trade barriers.
But the only deal signed Friday was a low-level agreement to combat organised crime.
The key sticking point in the talks involved energy issues, Barroso said.
Europe gets about one-fifth of its gas from Russia via Ukrainian pipelines, and a pricing dispute between Moscow and Kiev brought a two-week
suspension of shipments in January.
Barroso also said next month's presidential elections in Ukraine will show whether the nation's politicians are truly united in their support of European integration.
