Health Education England’s recent review of the Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) process identified a range of improvements that could be made to how doctors in training are assessed, appraised and supported. Doctors in training themselves were an intrinsic part of the review, as well as those providing medical training and organisations such as the BMA, GMC, Medical Royal Colleges and others.
Among the most important things that doctors in training told was that the ARCP process was run differently from place to place and that they wanted to know what to expect when moving to a new training location. To help to address this, we have produced this animation, which talks you through what the process is and how it should work. Among the key issues that it clarifies are that ARCP panels should be held in absentia of the trainee, but that face to face feedback should be given after the panel has met. It also explains things like how many times a trainee should expect to see their Educational Supervisor, what they can expect from their Supervisor and what their responsibilities are to collect information on their training progression.
We hope that the animation will be of use to doctors in training and their Educational Supervisors so that everyone understands how the ARCP process will take place.
