(10 Aug 2021) A massive wildfire burning for days on the northern tip of Greece's second-largest island continued to destroy forest land on Tuesday.
Its thick smoke hung in the streets of a nearby town as hundreds of firefighters battled to save what they could.
The fire has been burning since August 3 in Evia, an island of rugged, forested mountains popular with campers and summer vacationers from Greece and abroad.
"The destruction is massive," said a volunteer who travelled from Athens to help firefighters in the village of Avgaria.
