Members of the girl band Pussy Riot were violently attacked by Russia's voluntary police, the Cossacks, in Sochi on Wednesday while they were filming a new music video. The girl band are famous for their outspoken campaigning for human rights in Russia. Members of the voluntary Cossack police force, who are in Sochi to keep the peace, used whips, brute force and tear gas against the band and other protesters. President Vladimir Putin has been keen for the Sochi Olympic Games to be a success but Russia has come under increasing pressure from the international community as evidence of human rights violations have come to light. Pussy Riot band members were jailed in February 2012, accused of hooliganism and religious hatred but they were released from prison last December in an amnesty ahead of the Sochi games.
