Interview with Prof. Peter Adamson on the Historiography of Philosophy in the Islamic World
مصاحبه با پروفسور پیتر آدامسون دربارۀ تاریخنگاریِ فلسفه در جهانِ اسلام (زیرنویس فارسی)
Why do we study history of philosophy, and not philosophy itself? Is philosophy detachable from its history? What’s the role of history of philosophy in understanding philosophy? If you also want to find answers to such questions, then you are in the right place: I am Hanif Amin Beidokhti and this is my Video-Blog on the Historiography of Philosophy in the Islamic World brought to you with the support of Fritz Thyssen Stiftung and LMU Munich.
What we talk about when we talk about History of Philosophy? What is falsafa, or Arabic philosophy? What is the role of history in understanding philosophy and what do we mean with historical research? These, and some others, are questions that I will discuss with my guest today.
My guest is Prof. Peter Adamson. Peter Adamson is a full professor of Late Ancient and Arabic Philosophy at Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich and one of the directors of Munich School of Ancient Philosophy. Previously, he has been the professor of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at King’s College London. He introduces himself as a “full-time historian of philosophy” and is the host of the widely known History of Philosophy Podcast. His long list of publications includes several books and dozens of articles on philosophical topics throughout the history of philosophy from ancient Greek to Arabic to Medieval philosophy. But, besides the history of philosophy, he is specifically interested in Platonic and Neoplatonic traditions and currents. He is the author of the book series History of Philosophy without any Gaps, which are revised, book versions of his aforementioned podcast.
