When you have around 500 tonnes of juicy Sicilian oranges and lots of people willing to throw them, it's going to get messy and sticky. The legendary 'Battle of the Oranges' has taken place in the Italian town of Ivrea. The annual event sees large crowds bombarding each other with the oranges, many of whom are dressed up in medieval costumes. The battle recalls the uprising in the 12th century of commoners against noblemen, with the oranges representing the oppressor's heads. More recently, in the 1930s, local girls started to throw oranges onto carnival parade carriages to make the boys notice them. The boys started to throw items back and overtime time a duel ended up being a real fight between the balconies and streets. The battle became the present contest following fixed rules only in recent history, after the Second World War. Report by Ashley Fudge.
