Some of Labor’s election promises may be facing the chopping block, as an intensive budget waste audit gets underway.
The waste audit will be going through grants and commitments line by line, in order to make space in what Treasurer Jim Chalmers is calling a “bread and butter budget”.
Infrastructure Minister Catherine King has acknowledged some programs will be dumped, telling ABC’s Insiders that “some of the things that the previous government funded we’ll fund, some of them we won’t”.
The Nationals have indicated they would be opposed to any cuts to regional grants.
