There are two types of scoliosis braces, each aligning with different treatment approaches. Traditional scoliosis bracing, often used with traditional treatment methods, focuses on slowing curve progression and preventing the need for surgery. The Boston brace, a widely used traditional brace, was designed in the 1970s and has changed little since. While claimed to be customized, the Boston brace often fits multiple patients similarly and works by squeezing the body to halt curve progression. However, this brace can be bulky and uncomfortable, leading to compliance issues as it becomes harder to wear, especially as the curve worsens.
The Boston brace relies on a simple three-point pressure system, which applies pressure to the spine. Over time, this can weaken the spine and does not address the three-dimensional nature of scoliosis. Boston braces are often prescribed for up to 23 hours a day during the child's growth phase, which can last several years.
Modern bracing, such as the ScoliBrace, is considered ultra-corrective. The ScoliBrace uses biomechanical principles to push the spine into a straighter position, treating scoliosis as a three-dimensional issue. Each ScoliBrace is fully customized for the individual, ensuring maximum comfort and effectiveness. As the patient’s condition improves, the brace becomes easier to wear, leading to better compliance and results.
Unlike traditional braces, the ScoliBrace addresses the rotational aspect of scoliosis and is part of a comprehensive conservative treatment program. This approach aims to preserve spinal health and prevent progression to the point of needing surgery.
Traditional treatment often reacts to the worsening of scoliosis, with bracing recommended only when the curve reaches 25 to 40 degrees. If the curve continues to worsen, spinal fusion surgery is often the next step. In contrast, modern conservative treatment with corrective bracing focuses on preventing progression and reducing the curve’s impact on the body.
A conservative treatment model typically includes chiropractic care, physical therapy, corrective bracing, and customized rehabilitation. This multimodal approach ensures that each treatment component supports the others, delivering the best possible results. The goal of modern corrective treatment is to reduce and stabilize the curve, aiming for the smallest possible curve in adulthood. This is a significant shift from traditional treatment, which primarily focuses on slowing curve progression.
At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we strongly advocate for corrective-style treatment, as it aligns with our goal of achieving the best long-term outcomes for patients.
