STORYLINE:
More than 20 detainees arrived at Kandahar airport base early on Thursday morning and were taken to a holding area by US soldiers.
There is tight security around the battered international airport, which is now home to more than 1,500 US Marines, Army, Navy and Air Force troops.
The Pentagon says it is referring to the men as "detainees" instead of "prisoners of war" because they have not been "officially classified".
Human rights watchdogs have expressed concerns that describing the captives as "detainees" instead of "prisoners of war" could impinge on rights guaranteed by international law.
However, the Red Cross said that any concerns about the captives' right to regular meetings with its officials were unfounded.
