Sand Dunes are not usually associated with rain water. In fact, the Dead Vlei, or Dooie Vlei has not had any inflow of river water for a very long time. The trees in this area died, and were preserved by the hyper-aridity of the desert.

However, sometimes it does rain, and when the water reaches Sossusvlei, a veritable wonder world emerges from the oldest desert in Africa. Green life springs forward, and animals, Namibians, tourists and film makers flock to Sossusvlei to see the spectacle.
