The Sopwith Camel was a British fighter aircraft that gained fame during World War I, as it was one of the most successful Allied planes, downing 1,294 enemy aircraft - more than any other Allied fighter of the time. The Camel was a challenging aircraft to fly, with sensitive controls that allowed skilled pilots to execute impressive maneuvers. The Vickers machine gun, located in the hump-like cowling over the cockpit, was a distinctive feature of the Camel, which made it an effective fighter. The Camel's most famous opponent was the Fokker Dr.I triplane, flown by the Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen. In fact, Richthofen was killed in his red Dr.I during a dogfight with a Camel!
