From the end of the 18th century, there was a tower on the rocky outcrop to the north of the pass on which an optical telegraph was mounted. It was part of a communication line that stretched from Lyon to Venice. This installation gave the pass its name: Col du Télégraphe. In 1884, the tower was replaced by the Fort du Télégraphe. The pass begins in the valley of the river Arc south of the village of Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne and is around 12 kilometres long. As the south side of the 1566 metre high pass only drops slightly to the winter sports resort of Valloire (1431 metres) and then rises again, the pass is also known as the pre-pass to the Col du Galibier further south. Road 902 is two-lane and very well developed and easy to drive along the entire route.
The road is located in the department of Savoie in the province of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
