Almost 40-50% of the total sugarcane is maintained as ratoon crop in Punjab. Most of the farmers can not follow the schedule and protocol of 2nd or 3rd generation crop production technology. In this video, we have highlighted important points about maintenance of ratoon crop. It has been advised that sugarcane should be harvested in accordance with the early or late maturing and only those varieties which have better rationing ability. Only healthy crop of heavy loam soil should be kept for ratoon purpose. Crop should be harvested 1-2 inches deeper from soil surface, stubble shaving should also be managed and trash should be scattered on the stubbles if harvested during frosty days. Ratoon crop should be fertilized more than a plant crop. It should be supplemented with 1-2 spray or fertigation of amino acids. Gap filling should be practiced during early spring season.
Sugarcane is one the profitable crops of Pakistan. But its profit is decreasing with the passage of time due to higher prices of fertilizers applied to it. Because for its better health, growth and development, balanced fertilizer plan is required to be followed efficiently. For getting better yield of the crop, it is essential and crucial to complete the needs of all types of micro nutrients. Dap fertilizer has become much more costlier as compared to previous seasons. Urea has also become or made short due to lack of planning and management.
