In the fight to slow climate change, the ocean might be humanity’s biggest ally. From studying seaweed's potential to become biofuel to increasing seawater's ability to sequester carbon, scientists at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are studying the many ways the ocean could help us stave off the worst effects of a warming world.
In a new effort, PNNL-Sequim researchers have teamed up with carbon sequestration technology company Ebb Carbon to test their technology that removes acid from seawater, allowing that seawater to absorb carbon dioxide without further acidifying the ocean.
This work is currently being supported by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office, Climate Works and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean Acidification Program.
