Following the successful Allied landings in Normandy in June 1944, the German forces defending occupied France were slowly being whittled down as the Western Allies' material superiority made itself felt. In July, the Allies prepared to break out of the Normandy coast in their mission to liberate the rest of France, spearheaded by the US Third Army under the illustrious General George Patton. Facing him was Generalfeldmarschall Günther von Kluge, who had the unenviable task of attempting to stop the overwhelming Allied forces.
