UTI in geriatric cases has got lot of causes. It might be plain UTI or due to partial retention of urine. That means post void urine is higher. When post void urine is higher that means, urine is stagnant there. Stagnant urine causes infection. So when we are treating the infection, we are treating the secondary cause. We have to find out the primary cause. We have to evaluate for lower urinary tract Infection. It might be meatal stenosis, phymosis, stricture urethra or a prostate. In these patients who have post void urine, then the control mechanism goes. Indirectly with infection, before he reaches the toilet, he will pass drops of urine in his undergarment. So we have to treat the primary cause and the secondary infective cause. Treating on the secondary cause will not lead to stop of urgency of incontinence in these patients. Further evaluation will only let us solve this problem.
