East Coast Art Studios live demonstrations by Eoin Llewellyn as part of 2 day portrait course exploring , John Singer Sargent's techniques including underpainting followed by an alla prima sketch in the limited earth palette. This was followed up by a demonstration of glazing in a number of key colors to add glowing madders, ochres, pinks and rich darks to the head. Many portraits from 1550 to 1900s are confusing to understand because many people cannot differentiate between what painting layers are in the lower and upper strata of the painting. Belling, Titian, Ribera , Ruben's, Velazquez and Sargent all used these techniques.
