Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was a man of great sacrifice, dedicating his life to the upliftment and empowerment of Indian society, especially the Muslim community. After the 1857 Mutiny, Muslims in India faced severe socio-economic and political challenges. Observing their dire condition, Sir Syed concluded that education was the key to overcoming these problems. He believed that without focusing on education, Muslim youth would remain backward, and broader national progress would be hindered. His efforts aimed at fostering education for the overall development of society.
Despite opposition, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan launched the Aligarh Movement with great enthusiasm. In 1864, he established the Scientific Society in Gazipur, Uttar Pradesh, to promote scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and modern knowledge among Indians. To further spread modern science, philosophy, and a true understanding of the Quran and Sunnah, he founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in 1877, which later became Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) under the Government of India Act 1920. Gibb referred to AMU as “the first modernist Islamic institution in the world.” Today, Sir Syed’s legacy lives on through the thousands of revolutionary leaders, thinkers, and professionals that AMU continues to produce, affirming its role in shaping the future. The university’s anthem (Tarana) stands as a testament to this enduring impact.
The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Tarana is the university anthem, written by Majaz Lakhnawi. It reflects the pride, legacy, and vision of AMU, celebrating its role in shaping the future of its students and the contributions made to society.
Here are the lyrics of the AMU Tarana in Romanized Urdu:
Tarana (Majaz Lakhnawi):
Sar say jo toofan ko takra de wohi hum hain
Is daur mein iqbal ka tarana hai humara
Jo abr yahaan se uthay ga, woh saare jahaan par barse ga
Har sheher-e-tarab mein garjay ga, har kuh-e-garaan par barse ga
Allahabad ho ya Lakhnau, Dilli ho ya Faizabad kahin
Woh abr yahaan se uthay ga, woh abr yahaan se uthay ga
Woh saare jahaan par barse ga, woh saare jahaan par barse ga
Yeh faiz hai sab ke wasl ka, yeh maikada sab ke husn ka
Yeh faiz hai sab ke wasl ka, yeh maikada sab ke husn ka
Yeh arz-e-Alig hai kaaba-e-ishq, yahaan se hijaz ko raah hai
Sar say jo toofan ko takra de wohi hum hain
Is daur mein iqbal ka tarana hai humara
The AMU Tarana emphasizes unity, intellectual contribution, and the idea that the knowledge and ideals fostered at AMU will spread across the world, reflecting the institution’s proud heritage.
