The Basic Education Department is proposing the phased reopening of schools. Briefing parliamentary committees Wednesday the department's director-general Mathanzima Mweli said the plan was for grades 7 and 12 to go back to school next Wednesday. This would mean that teachers would go back to school as early as next Monday, with learners returning on the 6th of May. There has been much outcry with parents saying that they will not send their children to school without there being adequate protection from COVID-19.
So will the phased plan work and can the school year still be salvaged?
