Irregular periods can be caused by Premature Ovarian Failure, also known as early menopause.
Here, the ovaries stop functioning properly before the age of 40.
Premature ovarian failure results in a reduction in the number and quality of eggs in the ovaries. The ovaries don't produce and release eggs regularly, therefore, the ovaries produce lower levels of the hormones, estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal imbalances either delay ovulation or you don't ovulate at all.
Reduced ovarian function causes an elevation of the pituitary hormone FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) in the blood.
FSH is normally responsible for the development and maturation of the follicles that holds the eggs in the ovaries. But now as the ovaries are no longer responding well to this FSH, we see fewer mature follicles and anovulation.
