Foraging & The Honorable Harvest
Some tips:
-Never harvest from the first patch you find, it could be the last.
-Only harvest what you need: Never take more than you need, leave enough for others (plants, animals, and people included), honor the plants life by using all of what you’re given, share what you’re given.
-Build a Relationship based in reciprocity: Knowing how to identify and understanding the lifecycle of a plant is important for safety and helps us build a relationship of respect. Before harvesting ask the plants permission, intuitively or by observing the surroundings. Give back to the plants by offering thanks, tending the plants, or spreading seeds.
-Harvest from safe areas: try to find low traffic areas, some roadsides and parks can collect pollutants or are sometimes sprayed with herbicide.
I'm grateful to have been shown this perspective through the works of Indigenous teachers, in particular ROBIN WALL KIMMERER. If you'd like to learn more I would highly recommend learning directly from the source.
