Elaborative Description:

WDM3D is one of the most advanced and powerful ALCo variant locomotives of Indian Railways. These 3300hp AC - DC Diesel - Electric locomotives are powered by V-16, 4-stroke, turbocharged engine from ALCo 251 family. Being a mix traffic locomotive, it is suitable for both passenger and freight trains. It is the successor of the famous 3100hp WDM3A locomotives.
The beautiful WDM3D locomotives have several features inspired from the EMD locomotives. These locomotives were manufactured by three production units of Indian Railways:
a) Diesel Locomotive Works (DLS), Varanasi, India
b) Diesel Loco Modernisation Works (DMW), Patiala, India
c) Central Railway Locomotive Workshop, Parel, India
As of now, the production of not only the WDM3D locomotives but all the ALCo as well as the EMD locomotives have been stopped for railway's own use since it is now gradually phasing out the diesel locomotives to welcome the electric locomotives.
