Contradanza Cubana "San Pascual Bailón" with Sitar and Marímbula.
In Cuba, during the 19th century, the Contradanza became an important genre. It was the first written music to be rhythmically based on an African rhythm pattern, and the first Cuban dance to gain international popularity.
It is intriguing to me why the composer (anonymous) decided to name this piece as San Pascual Baylón, being this saint not as revered as other saints in Cuba.
Maybe because of the Spanish popular tradition that says this saint went into ecstasy when cooking that he would start dancing, making him the patron saint of cooks (changing his last name from Baylón to Bailón [dancer])
Or maybe the composer was a true believer of this saint, either in the Catholic way or in the cult of San Pascualito, the Latin American cult that may be related to the worship of a pre-Columbian death god.
Very intriguing... What do you think?
