Scottish ministers are backtracking on climate change targets after a damaging report warned that they are “no longer credible” and cannot be met.
In a significant climbdown that is likely to create fresh tensions with the Scottish Greens, Màiri McAllan, the SNP’s net zero secretary, announced her party’s ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions by 75 per cent within the next six years are now unachievable.
It will be seen as a betrayal of the commitments made in the Bute House agreement, which brought the Scottish Greens into power and promised “steps to accelerate our transition to net zero — more support for active travel, transformation of home energy and a ten-year transition fund for the North East of Scotland”.
