Donald Trump has become only the third US president in history to face an impeachment trial with proceedings now officially underway in the Senate.

Republican Mitch McConnell and Democrat Charles Schumer have delivered their opening remarks with the eyes of the world watching.

The US President has called claims he tried to get help from Ukraine to get himself re-elected a "hoax" and a "witch-hunt".
