The United Arab Emirates became the first Arab country to open a nuclear power plant, raising concerns about the long-term consequences of introducing more nuclear programs to the Middle East.
For decades, oil has powered and enriched the Emirates and its Gulf neighbours. However, the UAE said it built the plant to decrease its reliance on the oil
The South Korean-designed Barakah nuclear plant has four units. A researcher at University College London’s Energy Institute, Paul Dorfman said, the UAE’s investment in these four nuclear reactors risks further destabilizing the volatile Gulf region, damaging the environment, and raising the possibility of nuclear proliferation
The UAE is already known as one of the biggest human rights abusers, which is involved in both the Yemen and Libyan proxy wars
In Yemen, about 130,000 people have been killed, including over 12,000 civilians. It created the world's worst humanitarian crisis in what was already the Arab world's most impoverished nation
In 2017, Yemen-based Houthi rebel group claimed an attack on the Barakah plant when it was under construction
Concerns have been raised that the Barakah plant is a serious threat to the stability of the region and its environment.
