I contacted Whole Foods to see if they sell produce treated with the Apeel food coating and here’s what I discovered. Whole Foods would not give me a straightforward or honest answer as to whether they sell produce treated with Apeel and left me with more questions than answers. I spoke to 3 regional corporate offices, 3 produce managers, and 3 customer service representatives who deflected me to each other. The three customer service representatives were aware of what Apeel is and gave me a predrafted statement on how Apeel is a plant based coating used to extend shelf life and that concern on social media has been miscontributing inaccurate safety information since Apeel has an immaculate health profile. The customer service reps said I needed to speak with local produce departments to see if they sourced produce coated with apeel. Customer service’s solution was for me and the produce department to look at the boxes that the produce came in for answers. So, I spoke to three produce departments at different locations. Since the local produce departments are not responsible for buying or sourcing the produce, none of them knew if they sourced produce with Apeel. Funny enough, all of the produce team members wanted to know if they did and recommended I contact the corporate offices, so we could all find out. One regional office told me that they do not source any produce with the apeel food but couldn’t point me to any corporate policy ensuring this. Another Whole Foods regional office told me that they likely source produce with Apeel and another office said that both Apeel and Organipeel meet their safety standards. Like the customer service reps, the offices told me that I would need to speak to local produce departments for answers on whether produce is treated or not. I don’t like how both the Whole Food’s customer service and corporate offices couldn’t provide a straightforward answer and put the responsibility on local produce departments because they aren’t the ones that source or buy the produce items and shouldn’t have to answer these questions for consumers. Whole Food’s former Co-CEO and board member Walter Robb is an investor and board member at Apeel, so I am not sure if this impacts Whole Foods Apeel transparency on the matter. My question for Whole Foods is do you source produce that has been coated with Apeel and organipeel and if so, which items are and how can we spot them at the store.
