WHAT IS A SECURITY CAMERA'S FRAME RATE?

Like all video cameras, security cameras work by taking dozens of pictures per second and stitching them together. When enough pictures are taken per second, it can give off the illusion of movement. The number of pictures, or frames, a camera takes every second is known as its "frame rate."

When looking for a new security camera, don't forget to check at how many frames per second (fps) the camera shoots video.

To give you a reference point, the lowest frame rate our eyes can interpret as fluid motion is around 24fps. Anything less than that will appear choppy; anything more than that will appear buttery smooth.

WHICH SECURITY CAMERA FRAME RATE IS BEST FOR ME?

Well, it can vary from person to person. The frame rate you choose to go with will largely depend on the speed of the subject you are trying to record and the kind of image you are trying to produce.

For instance, if you've positioned your camera outside to take smooth video of moving vehicles, you'll probably need a higher frame rate than if you're only trying to capture smooth video of people.

If smooth video isn't as important to you, then you may choose to go with a lower FPS to save on bandwidth and storage.
