December 3rd: Celebrating the Legacy of Khudiram Bose, India’s Fearless Freedom Fighter
The Young Martyr Who Smiled at Death
In the early morning of August 11, 1908, the British gallows witnessed an extraordinary sight—a brave 18-year-old boy named Khudiram Bose, his face glowing with a fearless smile, holding a Bhagavad Gita in his hand, walked steadily to embrace his death. Just before the noose tightened around his neck, he let out a full-throated cry of "Vande Mataram," a chant that reverberated within the prison walls, shaking the very core of British imperial power in India.
Khudiram Bose's story is not just the tale of a freedom fighter but a symbol of undying courage and sacrifice. At an age when most are beginning to dream about their future, Khudiram chose to sacrifice his life for the freedom of India. He became one of the youngest martyrs in India's fight against the British Raj, inspiring countless others to join the revolutionary movement.
Born on December 3, 1889, in a small village called Habibpur in Bengal, Khudiram was stirred by the rising patriotic fervor ignited by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's song "Vande Mataram" and the writings of revolutionary leaders like Aurobindo Ghosh. At just 16, he began distributing seditious handbills titled 'Sonar Bangla' at public fairs, stirring the masses against the British rule.
Khudiram became a member of the Anushilan Samiti, a secret revolutionary organization, where he mastered the use of weapons and bomb-making. He was later chosen to avenge the atrocities of the infamous British magistrate, Douglas Kingsford, known for his harsh punishments against Indian nationalists.
On the night of April 30, 1908, Khudiram, along with his companion Prafulla Chaki, targeted Kingsford’s carriage in Muzaffarpur. Though the bomb missed its mark, it left the British rattled, triggering a nationwide manhunt. Khudiram was captured the next morning after a dramatic chase, bravely accepting responsibility for the attack.
His trial was swift, and on June 13, 1908, he was sentenced to death. Yet, not once did he flinch. When asked if he understood the verdict, Khudiram boldly replied, "I know its meaning better than you do."
The poet Pitambar Das beautifully captured Khudiram’s spirit in his poem:
"Ekbar biday de maa ghurey ashi,
Hansi hansi porbo phansi, dekhe jeno Bharotbashi."
Translation: "Mother, bid me farewell once, I will return soon. I will wear the noose with a smile, let all of India witness it."
This is the untold story of Khudiram Bose—an inspiring tale of youthful bravery, sacrifice and unwavering patriotism that still resonates in the hearts of millions.
