Archbridge Director of Programs Ben Wilterdink talks with Priya Sarathy Jones of the Fines and Fees Justice Center about how excessive fines and fees trap Americans in poverty. The two discuss how this problem has grown, the downward spirals that can occur once a person is stuck with a fine they cannot pay, and how states and localities are working to address the problem.
Priya is the National Policy and Campaigns Director at the Fines and Fees Justice Center where she is principally responsible for supporting and leading national coalitions for fines and fees reform. Prior to joining the FFJC, Priya worked at the Department of Justice for nearly a decade, serving in a variety of policy positions. Her portfolio included public defense, with an emphasis on 6th Amendment issues, as well as wrongful conviction, capital case litigation, and tribal law enforcement. In addition to her policy work at the Justice Department, Priya also served as Senior Counsel for the House Oversight Committee.
