As people begin to age, most will experience a small amount of brain shrinkage which is a normal part of the aging process and causes, what is commonly referred to as, normal aging memory loss. The next category of memory loss is mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or the stage between normal aging memory loss and dementia where one can recognize that your memory has “slipped.” The next category of memory loss is dementia which is a decline in memory loss that is severe enough to interfere with daily life and activities. In this short video, Vicki Armstrong, Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, discusses the progression of memory loss and what to expect in each category.
