As South Korea shortens the vaccine interval for booster doses to grapple with rising infections among the elderly... other countries around the world are increasing their efforts to speed up administering additional jabs,... as well as tightening social distancing restrictions.
Choi Won-jong explains further.
The World Health Organization reported... more than 63-percent of the total global caseload have come from Europe... pushing health authorities to act.
In Austria... the government has ordered a lockdown for unvaccinated people over 12 years old... with a fine of around 16-hundred U.S. dollars imposed on rule-breakers.
The new measure is expected to keep 2 million people at home.
Starting November 12th... a partial lockdown has been in place in Netherland.
"The outbreak management team advised us to limit the amount of social contacts to reduce the number of infections for a few weeks in wide-reaching crackdown, because the virus is everywhere, in the whole country and among all age groups."
This means... all restaurants and bars will be shut after 8 PM... and, no spectators will be allowed for major sporting events.
Over in Germany where daily covid cases have been increasing for SIX consecutive weeks... people are now required to show a negative PCR test result when using public transportation.
The Czech Republic has also been preparing to initiate similar lockdown restrictions for unvaccinated people in the coming weeks.
Some countries such as the U.S. and UK are expanding their booster shot policies to prevent further spread.
Health officials in New York City said Monday... all adults aged 18 or older who would like to receive the additional jab are now eligible to seek them out.
This comes as officials are worried about potential resurgence during upcoming the holiday season, with Thanksgiving and Christmas ahead.
As winter approaches... the UK government will offer boosters to all adults in over 40.
"The data tells us the booster dose markedly strengthens existing protection and will extend the duration of that protection against serious disease."
Meanwhile... in Asia... Japan will begin administering booster shots to those aged over 18... starting next month.
