Galleria Continua is delighted to present the 6th edition of Continua XXL Online with Anish Kapoor’s 2015 work “Descension”, a seemingly impossible to implicate feat of engineering and manipulation of the environment – creating an autonomous, independently moving, figurative dervish of water that presents before us a void that engages in a symbiotic exchange between emptiness and creation. Empty space that represents the unimaginable and dark but also has the ability to create human connection and shared experience.
The void, a notion explored constantly in Anish Kapoor’s artistic practice, is investigated here through a dynamic recall to mythological and culturally significant figures – Plato’s cave which upholds a certain reality that actually is indicative of much more but that goes unseen, the object after Psychoanalysis and how it has found itself between being and non-being, and Dante’s voyage into Inferno, where what was predicted as vacant and horrific was full of manifestations of human emotional, physical and spiritual experience.
